International Day of Disabled Persons recognises visible and invisible disabilities, to promote the importance of inclusion in life and the workplace. An annual event, World Disability Day is hosted by the United Nations and encourages leaders across the globe to value the unique contributions of disabled people.
When is the International Day of Disabled Persons 2023?
International Day of Disabled Persons is the 3rd of December 2023. First launched in 1992, the event is in its 31st year of celebration, marking three decades of meaningful change for the disabled community.
What is the theme for International Day of Disabled Persons 2023?
In 2023, the theme is about making the world better and fairer for people with disabilities.
When something is inclusive, everyone:
- can take part
- feels like they belong.
Everyone needs to work together to make this happen.
The United Nations says that the work everyone does as part of this theme should:
- involve people with disability
- be for people with disability.
The World Health Organization estimates there are over 1 billion people — about 15% of the global population — who experience some form of disability, and this number is increasing. Almost everyone will be permanently or temporarily impaired at some point in their life.
Children with disabilities represent a diverse group with a wide range of needs, and some of these are not easy to see. Disparities abound in this population, from access to health care to education and employment. Many childre with disabilities also have underlying health needs that make them particularly vulnerable to COVID-19. Unfortunately, people with disabilities are often invisible, left out of the ‘diversity and inclusion’ conversation.
Too many disabled children have no social interaction, no education, no medical care and often no food. Many are left alone in a room, sometimes chained up. They face huge challenges. Negative beliefs, distant governments and the fact that only one percent of aid targets disabled people, means that there is often little chance they will be removed from the poverty spiral they are trapped in.
Watoto Ciao supports disabled children and their caregivers. We work to change the negative attitudes that exist, support disabled children into education and provide medical attention to those who are in need.
POEM FOR A MOTHER
My mom isn’t just a mom at all
She’s also something else
My mom isn’t so quiet or shy
But she’s proud and doesn’t care what others say about her
My mom is like a friend who I will never forget
My mom is always there
Whether I’m sad, happy, lonely, or angry
She’s always there, ready to listen
My mom always give me advices to overcome any problems
She supports me in any way
My mom is like a genius to me
She may not be like genius of studies
But she’s a genius of me
My mom knows what I think, what I will say, she knows everything about me
My mom knows what to do to make me calm down
My mom knows how to make me automatically happy
My mom knows what and how I feel
My mom knows what I need the most
My mom is like an angel God sent from Heaven
My mom is loud, weird, and crazy
But she understands me the most
My mom always help me to fix my mistakes
My mom always help me to reach my dreams
My mom always love me no matter what
My mom doesn’t care if I am handicapped
My mom doesn’t care if I’m missing a finger
She doesn’t care
My mom loves me the way I am
My mom is like someone who I can’t give up on
My mom is like… a daughter of God.
